Titania
A downloadable game
Titania Prototype V4.1
It’s 2123. You wake up in a desolate facility, seemingly abandoned after a scientific anomaly that forced everyone to evacuate. This info and other bizarre mysteries is what you will discover by exploring this place on your own, filled with environmental hazards and security measures stopping you at every turn. Unfortunately, you don't have infinite time to escape this conundrum. Whatever anomaly occurred long ago is quickly corrupting your body now. To avoid imminent death you must utilize dangerous technology: time dilation, but be vigilant--the more time you buy, the harsher the consequences.
A core aspect of this experience is driving player freedom of discovery through smart game design. To the best of our ability and time given the environment itself is meant to lead the player to the right places and information, but it can take many tries for some people, and that's the point. The idea here is that beating the game is truly the result of the player overcoming a knowledge barrier on their own, which can be more satisfying than if told exactly what to do. Titania is not meant for everyone! For those who feel frustrated, there is a guide in the pause menu.
Conceptually the two primary game inspirations for Titania are Outer Wilds by Mobius Digital and Alien: Isolation by Creative Assembly. The art style is inspired by a variety of styles such as cassette-futurism, retro-futurism, Bauhaus, and 70s Contemporary. The puzzle structure in TItania is quite unique due to the time travel aspect. This gimmick funnels every interaction into a complex puzzle. The player is not only thinking about what they are doing now but what consequences it will hold in another timeline. This prototype only scratches the surface of this concept and I plan on expanding it into a full length game eventually.
